Choosing Mutual Fund Categories for Different Financial Goals
By Mr. Satishkumar Kagre

One of the most common questions investors ask is which mutual fund to choose. A more useful starting point is which category fits the goal — because category selection matters as much as individual scheme selection.
For short-term needs within one to three years, liquid, ultra-short and short-duration debt funds are often considered. For medium-term goals, hybrid or balanced advantage categories may be evaluated depending on risk comfort and time horizon.
For long-term goals such as retirement or children's education, equity-oriented mutual fund categories may be considered — but only where the investor's risk profile and time horizon support it. These are mutual fund categories, not direct stock investing.
Rather than comparing recent returns alone, review whether the category matches when you need the money, how much volatility you can tolerate, and whether the fund's role in your plan is clear.
